Le Mas de Mortiès

In the heart of the garrigue, between the Mediterranean and the Cévennes, 20 km north of Montpellier, in the commune of Saint-Jean-de-Cuculles, Le Mas de Mortiès has remained in its raw, wild and mysterious state.
Originally, this type of isolated dwelling required an almost complete self-sufficient life, so much so that each Mas, in addition to the residential buildings and sheepfolds, always included a well, a vegetable garden, a "lavogne" (stone-lined pond) to collect rainwater, an oven, a pigsty, a barnyard and a dovecote.
As for agriculture, at Mortiès as in all this disadvantaged piedmont region, it was long a polyculture where sheep farming played a predominant role. It was associated with a few olive trees, vines and cereals if the land was suitable.
Today, Le Mas de Mortiès is primarily dedicated to viticulture, which has led to the modernization and extension of the winemaking cellar, the transformation of the old sheepfold into barrel cellars for aging white and red wines, and the creation of a tasting room.
